Who's answering these questions? See that stick figure running annoyingly across your screen? That's me. Can I get on a prospect list?
notifications for upcoming CBRC events. For those wanting to join immediately, please send an email or call Todd at 612-220-4251. What is the structure of Calhoun Beach Running Club? Runners join CBRC either through June or through December. We have two official training seasons kicking off in mid February (spring, associated with Grandma's) and late June (summer, associated with TCM and Chicago). Head coaches are Kevin Haas and Paul Donnelly, along with ass't coach and organizer Todd Melander. Runners get schedules, coaching, support stops, and group- participation. For spring and summer there are three running groups. Our strength coach/consultant is Luke Carlson. What about Boston? It's a fine city. We had a 2009 Boston Marathon training season that started in early January. Our 2007 runners included the 4th Minnesota male and 4th Minnesota female. Outside of an actual racing team, we're sure no running club had better results! We also had a number of people run Boston for fun, and still a number of others who traveled to Boston for fun and to support the group. Whether or not in 2010 we have a big group like we've had in previous years, we will tailor a running schedule to your Boston needs. In 2009 we had about 10 qualifiers by fall 2008, with more expected by the time Boston training starts up in January. I don't want to run a marathon...is this still the club for me? If you plan to run a half marathon or a 10 mile race, then this is definitely the group for you. The difference in training for the these races vs the marathon is mostly the length of your weekend runs. We accommodate shorter Saturday runs. If you really just want someone to run seven miles with on a weeknight, we are good for that. Remember, too, that you do not have to participate to the extent most marathoners do (e.g. you can reduce the hill workout by doing less repeats). I can't make it to weeknight runs, what are my options? Come run with us on Saturdays. The long weekend runs are the toughest and most important runs, so this is a great chance for you to run with other people and make these runs fun and easy. Unfortunately, we do not have a different weekday option. Who's in charge? Cari Tschida (carry chida rhymes with Ida), the athletic director of Calhoun Beach Club is officially in charge of everything. Cari lets Todd have his way on everything. Todd and Cari agree with everything Kevin or Paul says, and all four hang on Luke's every word. The five of them make an incredibly cohesive management team, appreciate each other's contribution, and especially feel they are a supremely intelligent and rather good-looking group. Note: Cari has taken a new position, so please direct all questions to Todd at 612-220-4251. Do I need to be a member of Calhoun Beach Club to join CBRC? Heavens to Betsy, no. But if you do join CBC, please list Todd Melander as the one who recruited you. He's soooo nice. What does CBRC cost to join? The cost is very reasonable by most standards and phenomenally low when you realize the number of days we run and all the fun and new friends you have. Added to the facts that CBRC has the best running location in the Twin Cities and the nicest, most fun people, we believe you can't make a better choice.
room both before and after runs, and we have a locker room in which to shower and dress. Our deal cannot be beat! Call Todd Melander for pricing details: 612-220- 4251. Can I come for a run without paying? Absolutely. We will ask you to sign a waiver, though. And let us know beforehand so the athletic desk is expecting you (or not, that's fine, too). Where is the running club located? The club meets at Calhoun Beach Club at 2927 Dean Parkway. What about parking? We agree with it. There is a parking ramp off Thomas Avenue. Take your parking ticket (no longer needed) to the athletic desk and trade it for a token. Don't lose the token. If you forget to grab a token, you will hate yourself. Most people have a couple extra in their car. How do I get to CBC? You need to get to Lake St. first. Coming from the west, take Excelsior, 7, or Minnetonka Blvd. east until it turns into Lake St. (you'll pass a BP station). Turn left on Thomas. Park in ramp. From the east, get on Lake from either Hennepin, Lyndale, or 35 W and go west until you take a right on Thomas. Where does the CBRC meet? We meet in the stretching room next to the cardio machines. When does the CBRC meet? 6pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday. Saturdays are 7am for our summer season (corresponding to TCM training, late June to late September) or 8am for the rest of the year. The goal is to get running by 15 minutes after the hour. Why weren't the last five questions combined into one? I'm a stick figure, Brainiac. I didn't register for the Twin Cities Marathon in time, do you have any entries? Why yes, thank you for asking. The problem is that even our entries are due by late July. You might be out of luck in 2009 if it's now past that date. In general, we have entries for TCM if you sign up with us in time. Will you just give me an entry and leave me alone? Sorry but we do have three rules with respect to runners gaining entry through us: 1. You must pay for CBRC through December and pay our summer training fee. This is in addition to the TCM entry fee. 2. You must actually train with CBRC (we will let TCM know otherwise, and they will revoke your entry). 3. You must volunteer with TCM one particular Saturday afternoon in September (9/xx/09) to assemble chips or stuff packets. That's a TCM rule, I guess. What are your training groups and their respective paces? We have Greens, Blues, and Golds. Please check out their individual pages for more info. Do I have to commit to a group? No, you may choose your group on a daily basis. Sometimes the group chooses you. Do I have to attend all the runs? Of course not. The only ones we'll look for regular attendance from are the ones receiving TCM entries from us. And by regular, we mean half or so. Is Luke dating anyone? Remember, there are no bad questions. But you'll have to ask Luke for the answer to this one. And if you decide to get your free workout with Luke, you must use, um, Todd Melander again as your referral. |
